Wines that Breathe of their place
Pyramid Valley
The wines of Pyramid Valley are born in the dramatic soils and slopes in North Canterbury, New Zealand. This unique site of altitude, limestone, slope, rock and rich soil is our Waikari Estate and home to some of the most profound Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in the world. Our second estate, Manata in Lowburn, Central Otago, has unique humus rich soils and produces deeply expressive and harmonious Pinot Noir wines.
Across both sites biodynamic viticulture and a natural approach to winemaking create handcrafted wine that breathes of its place and tastes like nowhere else on earth.

Chardonnay -Marlborough
Bright lemon hue to the wine. An expressively interesting aroma of white flowers, citrus and ripe tropical summer fruits. The palate is focused and concentrated showing ripe fruits and citrus characters with an attractive texture and balanced acidity.

Cabernet Franc -Hawke's Bay
Vibrant, deep dark ruby, with fascinating, glitter-like lights. Immediately engaging,: crushed berry, smoke, and a compelling cured meat/ fresh leather note; also a spicy, bright, dried herb character, like Indian bay or curry leaf. Fresh, full, firm, with succulent berry fruit, but implosive structure. Neither vague, nor sweet. Long, staunch finish, with alternating tranches of fruit, spice, and tannin. Something soothing but stalwart here, surprising in a year elsewhere prone to superficiality or glibness: testimony to talented growers working a gifted site.

Chardonnay – North Canterbury
2016 Lion’s Tooth ChardonnayBrilliant, pale platinum gold. Youthfully closed at first pour, but opening with intense and diverse aromas, ranging from wet slate minerality, to Granny Smith apples, Meyer lemon, and juicy nectarine, backed by enticing empyreumatics. A chalky mouthfeel and broad shouldered body, work towards creating a synergy to be reckoned with. Power and vivacity are complimented by ongoing length, like an arm reaching out and pulling you back in for more.

Chardonnay – North Canterbury
2016 Field of Fire ChardonnayBrilliant, pale straw yellow. Complex aromatics: boxwood and petrichor minerality open without hesitation to ripe white peach, bright pink grapefruit, lime pith, and subtle hints of dried herbs and toasted brioche. A supple and generous roundness which dances across palatte. This 2016 Field of Fire is a standout example of power and intensity complimented by incredible poise and a lively, playful length. Pure eruption from soil and season.

Pinot Noir – North Canterbury
2016 Angel Flower Pinot NoirDense, sustained ruby/garnet.Dizzyingly aromatic, swells from the glass: indurate spice – clove, cumin, caraway, cassia; ripe and bright red fruit – raspberry, redcurrant, Morello cherry. Quite a head-spinning, aromatic ride. Penetrating, juicy, sappy, brisk yet enveloping; vibrant flavors of red fruit and spice; also a lively earthy component that is relatively new to this vineyard, arriving in recent vintages: born of vine age and a deeper root structure, no doubt. One could hardly ask for a more invigorating, seductive, and briskly legitimate example of this wine.

Pinot Noir – North Canterbury
2016 Earth Smoke Pinot NoirSaturated, opaque ruby/garnet. Fascinatingly, astonishingly, unlike its sibling, the Angel Flower, given proximity and wine-making and –growing equalities: pungent soil tones, tobacco/bark and fresh-turned earth, also with dried herbs: bay, lavender, Mexican oregano, even. The fruit spectrum is blue and black. Really sings soil, stratum. Great weight and texture, dense but mouth-coating, with brighter fruit flavors than the nose might suggest: blueberry, blackberry, sloe. Salinity, from significant active lime in the soil, waters the mouth, extending an already obdurate length. Whereas, with vine age, the Angel Flower is adding content to its early charm, the Earth Smoke seems to be marrying fruit succulence to its established, adamantine, soil-sponsored clout.

Botanical Collection – North Canterbury
2016 Pyramid Valley Botanical Collection 4-pack presentation caseThe story of our Botanical Collection is rooted in the foundations of our Waikari Estate in North Canterbury. The initial plantings were arranged by Mike and Claudia Weersing according to specific minute changes in soil composition between the unique limestone and clay particles. These changes reflected the decision to plant either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Interestingly, the meadow growing in each parcel was also different, with different species of meadow plants being present. These parcels have been named according to the dominant botanicals in the meadows from their beginnings as a vineyard in 2000, and since their release in 2006 they have created a new dimension for fine New Zealand wine, illustrating the incredible impact of this remarkable vineyard on the sense of wine.
They are wines that truly breathe of their place.Secure your collection of the 2016 Botanical Collection, presented in a stunning custom-made display case.
