Wines that breathe of their place
The wines of Pyramid Valley are born in the dramatic soils and slopes in North Canterbury, New Zealand. This unique site of altitude, limestone, slope, rock and rich soil is our Waikari Estate and home to some of the most profound Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in the world. Our second estate, Manata in Lowburn, Central Otago, has unique humus rich soils and produces deeply expressive and harmonious Pinot Noir wines.
Across both sites biodynamic viticulture and a natural approach to winemaking create handcrafted wine that breathes of its place and tastes like nowhere else on earth.

Pinot Noir – North Canterbury2016 Angel Flower Pinot Noir
Dense, sustained ruby/garnet. Dizzyingly aromatic, swells from the glass: indurate spice – clove, cumin, caraway, cassia; ripe and bright red fruit – raspberry, redcurrant, Morello cherry. Quite a head-spinning, aromatic ride. Penetrating, juicy, sappy, brisk yet enveloping; vibrant flavours of red fruit and spice; also a lively earthy component that is relatively new to this vineyard, arriving in recent vintages: born of vine age and a deeper root structure, no doubt. One could hardly ask for a more invigorating, seductive, and briskly legitimate example of this wine.
Pinot Noir – North Canterbury2019 Angel Flower Pinot Noir
Ruby/garnet hue. Dizzying aromatics swell from the glass: indurate spice – clove, cumin, caraway, cassia; ripe and bright red fruit – raspberry, redcurrant, Morello cherry. Quite a head-spinning, aromatic ride. Soft silky texture the wine glides across the palate with vibrant flavours of red fruit, and a saline spicy complexity. A pure vibrant expression of Angel Flower.
Pinot Noir – North Canterbury2016 Earth Smoke Pinot Noir
Saturated, opaque ruby/garnet. Fascinatingly, astonishingly, unlike its sibling, the Angel Flower, given proximity and wine-making and –growing equalities: pungent soil tones, tobacco/bark and fresh-turned earth, also with dried herbs: bay, lavender, Mexican oregano, even. The fruit spectrum is blue and black. Really sings soil, stratum. Great weight and texture, dense but mouth-coating, with brighter fruit flavours than the nose might suggest: blueberry, blackberry, sloe. Salinity, from significant active lime in the soil, waters the mouth, extending an already obdurate length. Whereas, with vine age, the Angel Flower is adding content to its early charm, the Earth Smoke seems to be marrying fruit succulence to its established, adamantine, soil-sponsored clout.
Pinot Noir – North Canterbury2019 Earth Smoke Pinot Noir
Vibrant ruby/garnet with great clarity. Opens to brooding aromas of blue/black fruits, spicy complexity and lifted florals. Dense compact palate with a core of lovely ripe, red fruits, savoury, sappy complexities surrounded by soft fine tannins and a salty salivating structure. Long and moreish! A pure vibrant expression of Earth Smoke.
Botanical Collection – North Canterbury2019 Pyramid Valley Botanical Collection 4-pack presentation case
The story of our Botanical Collection is rooted in the foundations of our Waikari Estate in North Canterbury. The initial plantings were arranged by Mike and Claudia Weersing according to specific minute changes in soil composition between the unique limestone and clay particles. These changes reflected the decision to plant either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Interestingly, the meadow growing in each parcel was also different, with different species of meadow plants being present. These parcels have been named according to the dominant botanicals in the meadows from their beginnings as a vineyard in 2000, and since their release in 2006 they have created a new dimension for fine New Zealand wine, illustrating the incredible impact of this remarkable vineyard on the sense of wine. They are wines that truly breathe of their place.
