Wines that breathe of their place
The wines of Pyramid Valley are born in the dramatic soils and slopes in North Canterbury, New Zealand. This unique site of altitude, limestone, slope, rock and rich soil is our Waikari Estate and home to some of the most profound Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in the world. Our second estate, Manata in Lowburn, Central Otago, has unique humus rich soils and produces deeply expressive and harmonious Pinot Noir wines.
Across both sites biodynamic viticulture and a natural approach to winemaking create handcrafted wine that breathes of its place and tastes like nowhere else on earth.
Sauvignon Blanc -Marlborough
Bright lemon hue to the wine. An excitingly expressive nose showing ripe tropical fruits with mineral/saline aromas and an underlying complexity. The palate is taught and powerful showing ripe fruits with lemongrass and citrus flavours, that flow into a fine phenolic and saline texture adding weight and complexity to the wine.
Chardonnay - North Canterbury2018 Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Chardonnay
Slightly hazy appearance with a golden lemon hue. Attractive nose with Nashi pear and citrus fruits, with an underlying savoury complexity. The palate is vibrant with tension and length, showing a nice mixture of bright fruit and savoury elements that North Canterbury is renowned for.
960 cases of 6 x 750ml produced.
Orange – North Canterbury2019 Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Orange
Pinot Gris with small amounts of Muscat and Gewürztraminer fermented on skins. Luminous peach/copper hue, with a reassuring, organic, light haze. Lifted floral aromas leap out of the glass along with burnt orange rind and a nutty complexity. Lovely fine phenolics fill the mouth giving great weight and texture to the wine.
Orange rind, peach and Negroni like flavours follow. A great wine to accompany a variety of tapas-style foods.
Pinot Noir – Central Otago2018 Pyramid Valley Central Otago
Medium dark purple with clear hues. Fragrant blackberry and raspberry with hints of liquorice, black pepper and clove. Sweet red plum, cherry and spice. Richly textured with lovely minerality. Complex with a long and silky sweet berry finish.
Chardonnay – North Canterbury2016 Lion’s Tooth Chardonnay
Brilliant, pale platinum gold. Youthfully closed at first pour, but opening with intense and diverse aromas, ranging from wet slate minerality, to Granny Smith apples, Meyer lemon, and juicy nectarine, backed by enticing empyreumatics.
A chalky mouthfeel and broad shouldered body, work towards creating a synergy to be reckoned with. Power and vivacity are complimented by ongoing length, like an arm reaching out and pulling you back in for more.
Chardonnay – North Canterbury2016 Field of Fire Chardonnay
Brilliant, pale straw yellow. Complex aromatics: boxwood and petrichor minerality open without hesitation to ripe white peach, bright pink grapefruit, lime pith, and subtle hints of dried herbs and toasted brioche.
A supple and generous roundness which dances across palatte. This 2016 Field of Fire is a standout example of power and intensity complimented by incredible poise and a lively, playful length. Pure eruption from soil and season.
Pinot Noir – North Canterbury2016 Angel Flower Pinot Noir
Dense, sustained ruby/garnet. Dizzyingly aromatic, swells from the glass: indurate spice – clove, cumin, caraway, cassia; ripe and bright red fruit – raspberry, redcurrant, Morello cherry. Quite a head-spinning, aromatic ride. Penetrating, juicy, sappy, brisk yet enveloping; vibrant flavours of red fruit and spice; also a lively earthy component that is relatively new to this vineyard, arriving in recent vintages: born of vine age and a deeper root structure, no doubt. One could hardly ask for a more invigorating, seductive, and briskly legitimate example of this wine.
Pinot Noir – North Canterbury2016 Earth Smoke Pinot Noir
Saturated, opaque ruby/garnet. Fascinatingly, astonishingly, unlike its sibling, the Angel Flower, given proximity and wine-making and –growing equalities: pungent soil tones, tobacco/bark and fresh-turned earth, also with dried herbs: bay, lavender, Mexican oregano, even. The fruit spectrum is blue and black. Really sings soil, stratum. Great weight and texture, dense but mouth-coating, with brighter fruit flavours than the nose might suggest: blueberry, blackberry, sloe. Salinity, from significant active lime in the soil, waters the mouth, extending an already obdurate length. Whereas, with vine age, the Angel Flower is adding content to its early charm, the Earth Smoke seems to be marrying fruit succulence to its established, adamantine, soil-sponsored clout.
